masak who would like to emcee today? 19:01
jnthn Well volunteered! 19:02
masak is too distracted, sadly
and I went last week. :)
jnthn Aww :P
OK, I'll do it...
colomon jnthn++
masak jnthn++
jnthn ...is there really only the four of us? :) 19:03
masak yes.
jnthn OK, let's do it alphabetically. :)
TimToady lrqs
Util_ I think so
jnthn colomon?
TimToady types left-handed today
TimToady sprain'd wrist 19:04
jnthn TimToady: Just find a reason to talk about databases a lot... :)
Ouch :(
colomon errr.... I put on a concert this weekend. Preparations and post-concert performer-hosting have occupied my entire week. Except I did get enough further on the endless pi project to do another blog post when I have time. EOR
jnthn Endless pi...almost as good as endless pie... :)
Util_ colomon++ # 3.14...
masak mmm pie 19:05
jnthn masak?
masak report: did not release Yapsi. painfully aware of this. will try harder this week. enormously distracted by the realities of life. submitted a few bugs, I think. EOR
jnthn Guess I'm...oh, j is before m... :)
masak :P
jnthn Anyway, I went to OSDC.TW, talked about stuff, uploaded the slides. Hacked a tiny bit.

jnthn My jetlag is bad this time...dunno why, normally I don't get it so much. :/ 19:06
Anyway, been helping a guy get a GSoC proposal together to do a bunch of S09 stuff.

jnthn Looking promising. 19:06
PerlJam jnthn++ yay!
colomon jnthn++ indeed!
jnthn Expect to work on natively typed attrs and other compiler toolkit bits this week. 19:07
First bit of the month is a lot of $dayjob, second half I've blocked out some Perl 6 days.
EOR
masak S09! \\o/
jnthn oh, slides are at www.jnthn.net/articles.shtml
colomon what's S09?
Util_ thx
jnthn Also there's code sample of the compiler developed in the talk :) 19:08
masak colomon: multidim arrays, hashes, and other goodies.
jnthn Util_: Any report?
Util_ I still intend to push out the .dmg for R* ASAP, but have only done testing&patching of Parrot branches this week.
EOR
jnthn colomon: S09 = Synopsis 9 = the one that talks about data structures, native types and stuff...
colomon ooooooooo 19:09

PerlJam I have a report of sorts :)
colomon masak++ too
jnthn PerlJam: Go ahead :)
colomon and Util_ ++
*++, really
PerlJam I said last week that I'd start looking at the book to see where it needed work. I didn't get much time to do that but I made a few notes
I decided to take the chapters in order. The first two (preface,basics) both look good and need very little modification IMHO 19:10
operators and subs-n-sigs have some notes for the author that need resolving and some TODOs that need flesh, but otherwise look good
All of the chapters need some sort of wrap-up at the end IMHO 19:11
moritz o/
PerlJam EOR I guess
jnthn PerlJam++ 19:12
PerlJam I'll continue to look at the book and make more notes (and write stuff where I can)
jnthn moritz: o/
moritz: Any report?
moritz a short one
* got my error grant approved
* recruited [Coke]++ as a grant manager
* thought more about the spec, and discussed some of it on #perl6 19:13
jnthn Oh, excellent :)
moritz plans for next week:
* more errors, erm, thinking about errors
* start to actually write down stuff (probably in a separate repo)
blocking on: tuits, brain 19:14

tadzik oh, and wrote an initial spec for META.info and friends!
and got moritz++ to help 19:17
moritz tadzik: please submit it tomorrow in the latest, so that some p5 folks also get a chance to look at it
jnthn tadzik: What's your GSoC proposal about? 19:18
moritz and that you still have some time left to change it (I think it becomes immutable when the application period finishes)
tadzik I think I can submit it even today
jnthn: Pod6 parser in Rakudo
jnthn: have you read it?
jnthn oh, nice
:)
tadzik: No, got a link?
tadzik I'd appreciate your opinion about it
sure 19:19
(let me convince my laptop that installing win7 is not the most important think on earth)

jnthn: ^
jnthn win7 wants MOAR RAM!
All ur resource are belong to it 19:21
;)
tadzik and all my disk IO /o\\
actually I think I was waiting for #phasers and last-call opinions on the proposal to send it
anyway: the META.info spec starting up, that'll probably just end up being S22-or-whichever redone 19:22
PerlJam tadzik: submit it!
masak \\o/ 19:23
PerlJam TPF only had 2 proposals last I looked. This worries me slightly (even knowing that we're all a bunch of procrastinators)
tadzik oh, the sooner the better? :)
jnthn tadzik: Great proposal! 19:24
PerlJam Well, submissions close at the end of this week.
moritz PerlJam: on the general mentors list many admins bemoaned reduced student influx
tadzik yeah, I remember about that
just, you know, lazy evaluation :)
moritz 3 submissions now
jnthn "Synopsis 26, which specifies the Perl 6 Pod format is an" - probably wants to be a comma after "format"
But that's a nitpick :)
moritz oh, 4
tadzik if that's the biggest mistake you've found, I'm glad :) 19:25
moritz pafo has 8
jnthn tadzik: :) 19:26
tadzik: Really hope this one gets approved. :)
PerlJam yeah, I used to think that maybe parrot was riding TPF's coattails a little bit, now I think it was the other way around :)
moritz jnthn: then sign up as a mentor, then you can vote on the proposals too
jnthn moritz: Oh, I need to do that anyway since I have offered to mentor the S09 one :)
moritz PerlJam: GCI changed that, I thikn
PerlJam moritz: yep. 19:27
tadzik so, any last thoughts before I submit this one?
maybe we don't really want Pod after all ;P
I should've sent it on April the 1st proposing to rewrite the spec and implement it all in XML 19:28
masak so obvious in retrospect. :) 19:29
PerlJam tadzik: you can still send that proposal, only I don't think it'll get the same response ;)
tadzik :) 19:30
now how do I turn a shiny LaTeX into a vulgar plaintext...
moritz regexes!
colomon surely there's an app for LaTeX to text out there somewhere... 19:31
moritz: I think you meant grammars!
moritz I have a latex2man in my $PATH
jnthn Applied to be a GSoC mentor.
tadzik pdflatex -> pdftotext. I'm sure it could have been done better, but...
moritz: tried that, it generated one line: "this file is generated, do not edit bla bla" 19:32
moritz tadzik: you'll have to hand-edit the result anyway
Util_ stackoverflow.com/questions/530121/...text-ascii

Util_ The canonical de-TeXing program is detex, which removes all comments and control sequences ... 19:34
Tex2mail is slightly more than a de-TeXer — it’s a Perl script that converts TeX files into plain text files...
They said the magic word :)
PerlJam Now that I read the S09 proposal I'm not as happy as I once was. I had imagined that it would use PDL data structures as reprs for Perl 6 datastructures, but the proposal reads like it's going to re-implement things that PDL already has.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it
tadzik moritz: it turned out quite fine after some minor editing 19:35
jnthn PerlJam: Those things are in the Perl 6 spec. 19:36
tadzik gist.github.com/892249#file_gistfile1.txt
jnthn PerlJam: Some PDL things are just part of Perl 6.
Whereas they weren't part of Perl 5.
So have to be in PDL
Util_ I have not read S09 lately, but I imagine that any part of PDL's design that were non-optimal due to P5 limitations, will be redesigned for P6. Someone can write a compatibility layer for existing PDL code. 19:37
jnthn Right.
I think we can end up with something much nicer in Perl 6.
But doing the whole lot is way too big for a GSoC project. 19:38
PerlJam yeah
tadzik takes a deep breath
jnthn So I encouraged picking a realistically achievable set of things, which will also be useful.
