Util Pre-report: Worked on Parrot Coverity issues. Plan to finish R* .dmg this week, with no more betas. EOR 18:54
masak pre-port: been coding a little Perl 6 lately. my free tuits are still very much an endangered species while I settle into the new job. I expect it to get better. I announced the winner of the p6cc contest. been discussing GSoC ideas with various people. EOR 18:55
PerlJam masak: did you give moritz_ his $100 (sorry I don't know how to compose a pound symbol on this keyboard) 18:56
masak PerlJam: I sent him some books on his wishlist, yes. also, there's no pound in EUR :) 18:57
PerlJam oh, it was 100 euro wasn't it? momentary brain lapse.
masak not sure when they'll arrive, but pretty sure they haven't yet. 18:58
we'll probably get progress reports from moritz_ as they do ;)
PerlJam I like thinking of it as 100 euro because I think it would be interesting if that "money" could make the rounds of #perl6 (now moritz_ needs to offer 100 euro for some contest :-) 18:59
masak actually, that's more or less what happened to me with the wiki prize :) 19:00
perhaps that's what you're alluding to.
I should say "to us", because there were three of us sharing that prize.

Util \\o 19:02
mberends whoz op? 19:03
PerlJam Is it #phasers time?
If so, who'se running the show? 19:04
masak I can run the show.
let's proceed in alphabetic order.
anyone have anything to report? 19:05
mberends a little...
masak mberends: go ahead.
mberends I have resumed benchmarking Rakudo, and am happy to report much lower RAM usage during typical spectests. 19:06
masak \\o/
mberends this is probably the result of excellent work by bacek++ etc on the Parrot memory management guts.
We are down to between 40MB and 50MB for typical spec tests, under half of what it used to be. 19:07
timings are on a gradual positive trend but still not as quick as alpha
This work is evolving into Popolnik, which will be ready for alpha testing soon 19:08
.EOR
moritz_ \\o/ 19:09
masak thank you. mberends++
moritz_: anything to report?
moritz_ received two items of the price today :-)
masak \\o/
moritz_ apart from that... let me think...
fixed a rakudobug that made a book example regress 19:10
discussed book variations with sjn++ in #perl6book
fixed the min() and max() bug for real
discussed gsoc proposal with tadzik++
discussed INET stuff with TiMBuS++ (IPv6 support seem to have regressed at leat partially) 19:11
I thikn that's it for now
masak moritz_++ 19:12
anyone I've missed who wants to make a report?
pmichaud is here in name but probably not behind the keyboard...
any questions or points of general discussion? 19:13
if not, we'll simply make it a short #phasers this week ;)
mberends what are the GSOC critical dates? 19:14
eg last date for submissions? 19:15
never mind, it's not important to me, I just wanted to understand the timeline that tadzik++ etc will be working to. 19:16
moritz_ hasn't found the detailed timeline yet 19:17
PerlJam How many Perl 6 proposals are there?
moritz_ the gsoc site has been relaunched, and I have a hard time finding anyhting
PerlJam: two pod6 related proposals so far
PerlJam And how many Perl 6 people are mentors?
moritz_ I have applied
and I want to encourage others to do that too 19:18
just to give them a fair rating, in presence of many p5 mentors
PerlJam moritz_: when did you apply? how long does it take to be notified? 19:19
I seem to recall that last year (or maybe the year before) everyone just sent their email to dukeleto or whoever the admin was
mberends I'll happily volunteer, and would appreciate such pointers 19:20
moritz_ PerlJam: about a day 19:21
you need to sign up on www.google-melange.com/
and then there's a list of orgs, search for Perl, apply at TPF 19:22
mberends ok
moritz_ rafl (Florian Ragwitz) is this year's TPF gsoc admin 19:23
colomon o/ 19:25
mberends aha, the timeline is all the way down this: www.google-melange.com/gsoc/events/...e/gsoc2011 19:27
yesterday student application period opened, will close 2011-04-08 19:28
masak I plan to apply as a mentor. also, I'm very excited about our Pod 6 proposals. (in case you couldn't tell from the #perl6 discussion) :) 19:29
PerlJam masak: indeed. 19:31
masak ;) 19:32
ok, anything else, folks?
colomon errr.... I'm working slowly on the endless stream of pi task. that's it for me at the moment.
masak colomon++ # pieces of blogging :) 19:33
PerlJam nothing pressing, but ... the book. Should we try to set a target date for completion?
masak and/or a roadmap for getting there...?
PerlJam Having the book ready for oscon would be nice. 19:35
or yapc::na
I don't know how much lead time chromatic needs to generate print copies, but I seem to recall that it wasn't very long (on the order of weeks)
masak a little less than a month, I think. 19:36
I guess both of those events are in the summer?
PerlJam yes, yapc::na in june and oscon July
masak oy vey. 19:37
our momentum on the book hasn't been spectacular lately.
I know it's "just" a matter of focusing on it and applying those tuits... but... 19:38
PerlJam Well, I'm getting the itch to write stuff and I want the book out there, so I've just now given myself a mission: mention the book at each #phasers and to write what I can and prod people about it until it's done. 19:39
masak PerlJam++ 19:41
just mentioning the book does indeed help. 19:42
ok, any other topics for today?
PerlJam I'll try to suss out areas where the book is weak for next week's #phasers and that'll be my report
Util PerlJam: I was about to ask for that :)
masak ++PerlJam 19:43
I think I could definitely comb through the book and come out with 100 or so TODOs. 19:44
question is where to get those tuits... :/
PerlJam masak: forego sleep :)
moritz_ one more thing... don't just plan to apply as mentor, do it NOW 19:45
spinclad (each day has a foregone conclusion)
moritz_ it doesn't take long: fill out a form, and write a line to rafl along with the application
like "I'd like to mentor possible Perl 6 projects" or so 19:46
PerlJam moritz++ 19:47
masak opens the appropriate browser tab as a compromise
PerlJam (I applied earlier today essentially as a direct result of the discussion with tadzik++)
PerlJam makes a mental note to ask masak tomorrow if he applied as a mentor. 19:48
masak ;) 19:49
ok... shall we call it wraps?
we can always continue pertinent discussion on #perl6...
moritz_ +1 19:50
PerlJam +1
masak oki then.
thanks everybody -- you're pretty awesome!
mberends continuing GSOC mentor signup in #soc-help on irc.perl.org... 19:55
