| moritz | fwiw for deploybook.com/ I've created markdown blog posts, ran them through Markdown.pl to generate HTML, put the HTML into my blog; then I thought about it for a while, and created part of the manuscript from the original .md file. Not perfect, but less work than starting a new blog | 10:56 | |
| [ptc] | moritz: are you planning on putting this book onto leanpub in a similar manner to your deployments book? | 10:58 | |
| moritz | [ptc]: since I'm not the only author, that'lll need to be discussed | 11:01 | |
| but probably yes | |||
| (though leanpub has since then started a 99USD charge for a new book, which makes me think twice about it) | |||
| the incoming sales were a pretty big motivator for me to keep going | 11:03 | ||
| [ptc] | I'll bet | ||
| moritz | and I'm proud to have sold 12 copies before even declaring the manuscript complete | 11:04 | |
| [ptc] | that *is* really cool. Very stoked for you! | ||
| I'd been wondering if the Perl6 book should be in p6pod, however then I just wonder if thought is simply bikeshedding | 11:05 | ||
| one motivator could be to find the rough edges on the p6pod spec | 11:06 | ||
| moritz | the toolchain issues were fairly distracting the last time I tried that | ||
| [ptc] | and "Programming Perl" was written in pod (well, pseudo pod, but mostly pod) | ||
| moritz | (it was Pod::PseudoPod, not Pod6) | ||
| [ptc] | yeah, that was my thought | ||
| moritz | I just want to use a working toolchain | ||
| leanpub, possibly softcover | |||
| [ptc] | markdown is nice and simple, but getting the tooling up and going for p6pod would be a pita | ||
| yup, one reason I asked about leanpub | 11:07 | ||
| p3rln00b glances over the backlog. | 12:03 | ||
| My personal taste for Pod is it's really annoying to type with its use of < > as markers. A book in Pod would be kinda annoying. | 12:04 | ||
| perl6.party uses Markdown for posts FWIW. No conversion to HTML required: github.com/zoffixznet/perl6.party/...aster/post | 12:05 | ||
| Well, MultiMarkdown with a few of my personal tweaks to insert module links and IRC conversations. | |||
| moritz | p3rln00b: nice | ||
| so, plan: | 12:51 | ||
| 1) I want to grab a domain name for the book | |||
| 2) I want to create a mailchimp mailing list | |||
| 3) we can start blogging, and put the signup form for the mailing list on the blog posts | 12:52 | ||
| p3rln00b: should we use your blog for that? | |||
| [ptc] | do you want something like p6book.perl6.org? | ||
| moritz | I thought of an independent domain | 12:53 | |
| [ptc] | ah, ok | ||
| moritz | because for me, this is like, our personal project, not under the umbrella of the perl6 org / domain | ||
| p3rln00b | Like the software of my blog to host the book blog? Sure. | ||
| Yeah +1 for independent domain | |||
| [ptc] | agreed | 12:54 | |
| p3rln00b | What's the sign up form for? For people to buy a copy of the book? | 12:59 | |
| moritz | p3rln00b: for signing up to the mailing list. We can then use the mailing list to inform them when it's out, do some progress updates etc. | 13:00 | |
| p3rln00b | Ah. ok | ||
| moritz | p3rln00b: maybe give them a discount for the book on leanpub, stuff like that | ||
| mailing lists sound pretty old-fashioned, but they *are* good for selling stuff | 13:01 | ||
| p3rln00b | And what the blogs will be about? | 13:27 | |
| moritz | well, in my previous book project, I first blogged about the topics I wanted to write about | 13:28 | |
| and then waited a bit, sometimes got feedback, and turned the blog post into a part of the manuscript | 13:29 | ||
| as I wrote in my initial gist, That helped me get around my imposter syndrome, because my standards for blog posts aren't as high as for book material. Writing the manuscript directly feels sooo much harder for me. | |||
| and it also helps to get people interested in the project | 13:30 | ||
| p3rln00b | :) | ||
| moritz | we don't have to do everything in that mode, but it sure helped me | 13:31 | |
| anyway, afk for a while | |||
